I haven’t done this in a really long time but it seems like just about the right time to try it again.

This year is slowly coming to an end. Thats right I am almost done with my junior year of college. 4 days left and I will be done with my third year of college. Something about this picture to me just doesn’t see right. There is no possible way that I am going to be a senior next year. After all didn’t I just move in from my freshman year like yesterday.

Well since this year is coming to and end it has really made me think about some of the experiences that I have had and the people that I have come into contact with.

Freshman year started the way that I would assume would assume that any freshman year would start. I was nervous to be starting this new chapter in my life away from home but I was excited to see what it would bring and how things would turn out. I met the most amazing group of friends, most of who I am still friends with to this day. Freshman year ended and I went home for the summer and was excited to start sophomore year in the fall. Sophomore year was pretty much the same as freshman year just my friend group seemed to double and I got involved in in more. Sophomore year ended a little differently because I would be leave SJU for 8 months and embarking on a semester abroad in the fall.

This fall i embarked on the journey of a lifetime. In August I boarded a plane with two of my close friends and we headed off to Galway in Ireland for the semester. It was such an eye opening experience for me and it allowed me to experience something that I had never done before. I had the opportunity to meet new people from other schools and get to know people from SJU that I didn’t really know before. I got to experience so many new cultures and travel to 8 countries while I was there. Being away from the people that I loved and cared about so much allowed me to see how important a lot of my relationships in my life were and who my true friends were.

Coming back to SJU was the hardest adjustment I had in a while. People continually told me that I had to remember that everyone at school had been through a semester and that they had changed to. For some reason I couldn’t get that through my head and I didn’t believe that was truth. I got back to school and realized some of my closest friends had moved on and were off doing other things and that they had things going on that I was not apart of. It scared me that I wasn’t as close to people that I used to be and I got scared that I was going to lose the friendships that I had always counted on. I still went through the same motions that i normally had done, but something just still didn’t seem right. There was still something missing. I interacted with new people and I got involved in the things that I used to but still something just wasn’t clicking. I looked to other people to try and make sense of where my place was but I just couldn’t seem to find it. Soon it was time for spring break and I was going on a service trip through school and I was praying that it would help me somehow. Turns out that it did. Apex for me this year was a saving grace. I didn’t know anyone really going into it this year so I had the opportunity to meet 25 new people. It turns out that everyone that was also abroad in my group had been feeling the same way about being aboard and I was glad to know that I was not the only one. It turns out that apex was just what I needed to find my place again. Although it did involve me spending less time with my core group of friends it was something that I needed to do in order to find my place and to get me back into the SJU spirit. Over time my relationships with the people in my apex group are still strong with a few but I will never forget what the group as a whole did for me when I was struggling to find my way. As this year is coming to an end and the seniors are leaving i have realized how much of an influence people can have on you when you don’t even know it.

There are always going to be those people that come into your life that are going to be there for the long haul no matter what. Then there are the people that come into your life for a reason even if only once and they are there to serve a purpose you just don’t know what it is yet. Those are the people that every time you see them you realize you met them for a reason and it is going to annoy you each time you see them until you find out what the reason is. Then there are the people that have come into your life you just didn’t realize how important they were to you. They are the people that have played a huge part in your life and you owe them a lot. Right now those are the seniors for me. Man of the seniors I have known for a while but it has mostly been through other people. Now I am starting to realize that they played a bigger part in me as a person. They are role models that have showed me how to act as a senior on hawk hill.
